The hailstorm followed other extreme weather conditions that swept through Western Canada, with Alberta and British Columbia under extreme heat warnings for much of last week, with temperatures reaching 40C in some areas.

Earlier significant storms spawned a tornado that destroyed an entire home in rural Alberta, torrential rains triggered a state of emergency

at least 34 cars were damaged by hail, but this number could be higher. She said most of the known injuries were minor, but one man suffered a cut on his neck, one woman suffered a panic attack and another man suffered shock. There were three collisions, she added.

Hail wreaked havoc in Alberta this week, battering drivers and forcing rural communities to survey crop damage.

A meteorologist with Environment Canada said several thunderstorm and tornado warnings were in effect for central and southern Alberta.
Parts of the county were pelted with hail the size of a softball, measuring about 10 centimeters, while other areas saw hail the size of baseballs, tennis balls or nickels falling from the sky.
