Cyclone Batsirai is expected to reach eastern Madagascar on Saturday evening, posing a threat to millions of people due to strong winds and rain.
Meteorologists fear tropical cyclone Batsirai could be more powerful than recent storm Ana, which also hit Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
Authorities said it could be the worst cyclone the island has experienced in 17 years.
According to meteorologists, wind gusts can reach up to 250 km/h, and the wave height is 15 meters.
Significant and wide-ranging damage must be feared.
After passing through Mauritius and Reunion, storm Batsirai was about 160 km east of the island and is expected to make landfall around 18:00.
The cyclone is forecast to cross the country from east to west by Monday morning.
The streets of Madagascar\'s capital, Antananarivo, were already quiet on Saturday as residents chose to stay at home and fortify their homes.
According to the authorities, about 600,000 people could be directly affected by the cyclone, and another 150,000 people could be displaced by landslides and floods.
In total, the cyclone poses a danger to at least 4 million people.
Experts say extreme weather events will become more frequent due to climate change.
The region has been hit repeatedly by severe hurricanes and cyclones in recent years, destroying homes, infrastructure and crops and displacing large numbers of people.
