Hail can uproot plants and virtually destroy small cars. Ten years after the record storm, the tin roofs of some buildings are still dented.

While climate change likely plays a role in these trends, meteorologists say, a more complete explanation could have something to do with the self-igniting interaction of human behavior and scientific discovery. As neighborhoods grow into areas that experience severe hail and more damage, researchers have been looking for large hailstones and documenting their size, sparking public interest and inviting further research.
